Routine - Habit Builder App

Product Design Case Study
Introduction

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Building habits seem impossible to me, it's easy to lose motivation and just forget about it. This all changed when I found out about Atomic Habit, the author James Clear lays out the framework for building sustainable long-term habits.

By using the same principle, I have designed, prototyped the Habit Building app, Routine to help myself and others build meaningful habits and change their life for good.

GOALS FOR THE PROJECT

1

Keep it simple
The app should help people break down a goal into mini attainable steps to motivate them and most importantly achieve them.

2

Make it invinsible
Building a habit itself is hard. When it's invisible, people should be able to complete their tasks without focusing on the app.

3

Develop & Launch
I hope this project can change some lives. After the design is complete, I will be looking into developing the app.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION

45%
Of all our actions are habits. Our brain does it to save energy and be more efficient.
21 days
Habit Building might be a myth. It usually takes from 18 days to 256 days to form a new habit.
66 days
Average days for a normal humans to form a new habit.
Br J Gen Pract. 2012 Dec;

Habits are ways for our brain to be efficient and save energy. Regularly, the brain tries to make every routine a habit, this way, the brain doesn’t have to think about repeated tasks and basic behaviors.

The process of habit is a four-step loop, starting with the cue. It is a signal that triggers your brain to initiate action. Secondly, craving tells us if the action is worth engaging or not. After this, we respond with action, it can be physical or mental, or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, it satisfies cravings and resets the loop. Also, in this step, the brain analyses if this habit is worth remembering for in the future, if the habit is insufficient in any of the steps, it is not going to stick.

By using this four-step loop, I have ideated and designed an app to help people build habits that actually stick.

Here is the mobile app called Routine, built with principles from "Atomic Habit' by
James Clear.

KEY PRODUCT FEATURES

in Making of a super-app

To be a super app, the app needs to do multiple functions. Adding functions here and there would be totally useless if they are not accessible.

In order to make things accessible, I have designed a dashboard as a Home Screen, where you can access mostly everything in the app.

Easy Sign-Up for Payment App

We ask for minimum viable information from our users on registration. They can set it up without any document and immediately start using the payment service.

As they progress, they can verify their ID with government-issued software without any hassle.

Super Loyalty Programme

The loyalty feature had multiple layers of functionality, and because of it, there were many use cases of different components in different situations.

Designing these scenarios was an integral part of developing a design system.

CREATING NEW HABIT

Habit Presets

Add your card once and use it forever. It is safe and secure in your wallet.

Set your Goal

Simple as scanning merchant’s Dynamic QR, it includes all the payment information.

LOGOTYPE

Simple, yet rememberable. Routine’s logo is based on the sun rising and starting a new day. As a routine, habits should be consistent, the best way to express this would be a day starting. Every day sun rises and it’s consistent.

READY FOR DEV.

When I finished the design, I realized that we rely on our phones a lot. I am now 100% committed to making my future projects rely less on technology and on the human factor.

As this was a self-initiated project, I am still working on this day-to-day. The next big step would be getting it into development. Not 100% easy but I am committed to making it work.

I will keep this case study updated and log my process here. Thank you for reading it.
